Hoxton, Middlesex
Hoxton is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the metropolitan district of Shoreditch, lying on the north-west fringe of the East End of London. Hoxton lay in the north of the ancient parish of Shoreditch. It is recorded in Domesday as 'Hochestone'. It developed as a hamlet along Ermine Street and along what is now Hoxton Street to its west. During Tudor Times it became a favoured site for country estates for the wealthy. Hoxton Square and Charles Square were laid out in the 17th century and the hamlet gradually saw development, becoming contiguous with Shoreditch by the mid 19th century. Hoxton Hall (1863), built as a music hall, retains it iron-railed, two tier galleried auditorium. The area is within the council area of Hackney.
