Hornsey, Middlesex
Hornsey is a town in Middlesex. The earliest reference, from 1195, is to 'Harenhg', the name of parish, village and town of Hornsey evolving from this, as do the names of 'Harringay' (the south-eastern district of Hornsey) and the council area of 'Haringey'. The ancient parish contained not just the village of Hornsey but the hamlets of Crouch End, Muswell Hill and Stroud Green. The village of Hornsey developed along what is now Hornsea High Street, at the eastern end of which is St Mary's Tower, the remains of the 13th century St Mary's Church. The village grew dramatically after about 1860. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Hornsey urban district (a municipal borough from 1903), during which period the whole area grew to be a town and a suburb of London. The town is within the council area of Haringey.
