Hornchurch, Essex
Hornchurch is a suburban town in Essex. Henry II founded a hospice here in 1159, which by 1222 had become known as the Monasterium Cornutum (Monastery of the Horns) possibly a reference to the local leather currying industry, which had a bull’s head with horns as its guild sign. St Andrew's Church dates from at least 1163, when it was given by Henry II to the priory. Leather remained at the heart of Hornchurch’s commercial life until the 19th century. The railway came in 1885 and was followed by limited suburban development. Hornchurch then saw massive suburban development during the inter-war period. RAF Hornchurch was an important base for Spitfires during the Battle of Britain. The town is within the council area of Havering.
