Holywood Motte, Down

Holywood Motte is an Anglo-Norman castle mound, situated commanding the narrow coastal strip between the high ground and Belfast Lough in the town of Holywood, County Down. King John is reported to have stopped at Holywood during his campaigns of 1210. In 19th central, spiral paths were cut into the mound and trees planted as landscaping. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Ards and North Down.
