Holborn, Middlesex

Holborn is a metropolitan district and an ancient parish in Middlesex. It lies partly within the partly outside the city of London's western boundary. The ancient parish lay on the west bank of the River Fleet (roughly modern Farringdon Street) the name referring to 'hollow-bourne', presumed to be a reference to the valley of the Fleet. The parish was split from ancient times into the part within the city and part outside it. The parish church of St Andrew's (within the city) dates from at least the 10th century, the present building being from 15th century. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the part of the parish outside of the city formed the basis, along with St Giles, of the metropolitan borough of Holborn. The area is noted for its links to the legal profession, The district is within the council areas of Camden and City of London.
