Hillsborough Castle, Down
Hillsborough Castle, the official residence in Northern Ireland of the British monarch, is a Georgian country house in Royal Hillsborough, County Down. It is within the townland of Small Park, in the civil parish of Hillsborough. It was built in the 18th century for the Hill family, Marquesses of Downshire. In 1922, the 7th Marquess of Downshire sold it to the British government. From 1924 until 1973, it was the official residence of the Governor of Northern Ireland, from when it became the official residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. The Richill Gates (SMR Number: DOW014:047) were made probably by Cornish immigrants, the Thornberry brothers of Falmouth, and were set up at Richhill in 1745. The gates were moved to Hillsborough in 1936. The house is within the council area of Lisburn and Castlereagh.
