Hill Deverill Medieval Settlement, Wiltshire
Hill Deverill Mediæval Settlement is an abandoned settlement which formed original focus of the mediæval village of Hill Deverill, Wiltshire. The modern settlement of Hill Deverill is to the north. The settlement remains consist of well defined earthworks to the west of Hill Deverill Manor House. During the mediæval period the economic base of the village was open field agriculture. Enclosure by Edmund Ludlow in the 17th century led to a loss of livelihood for the villagers and by 1773 the area now occupied by the earthworks was devoid of settlement. The site is within the council area of Wiltshire.
