High Barnet, Hertfordshire / Middlesex

Chipping Barnet (aka High Barnet, often just Barnet) is a suburban market town which lies mainly in Hertfordshire but partly in Middlesex. Barnet is a suburban development built around a twelfth-century town. King John issued a charter for a market at Barnet in 1199. St John the Baptist Church was erected by John de la Moote, abbot of St Albans, about 1400. Barnet Hill lies on the historic Great North Road and was a major coaching route. Many centuries ago, the town spread north along the Great North Road and into Middlesex. The town is within the council area of Barnet.
