Heywood is a town in Lancashire, to the south of the River Roch and the Cheesden Valley. The area was sparsely populated until the Industrial Revolution when Heywood developed into a mill town and coal mining district, its landscape dominated by large brick-built cotton mills. The church of St Luke the Evangelist (1860-1862) has a tower and spire of 188 feet, dominating Heywood's townscape. Heywood War Memorial lies in Memorial Gardens opposite the church. The town is within the council area of Rochdale.
