The council area has a significantly different area to the historic county from which it takes its name, primarily in that does not include a significant area of the historic county which includes High Barnet, New Barnet and Totteridge. The Hertfordshire council area also includes the Potters Bar area of Middlesex. There are also several other small differences between the boundaries of the council area and the historic county.
