Hendon, Middlesex

Hendon is a suburban town in Middlesex. The earliest known use of the name is from 1005 as 'Heandunigna'. Until the mid 19th century Hendon was little more than a large village. Hendon Station opened in 1868 and this encouraged suburban development. The arrival of the trams and tubes between 1906 and 1924, promoted the greatest growth. From 1894-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish formed the basis for Hendon urban district (a municipal borough from 1932). Hendon Town Hall (1901) was designed by Thomas Henry Watson in the Pre-Renaissance style. The RAF Museum is based at the former Hendon Aerodrome. Hendon Police College opened in 1934. The town is within the council area of Barnet.
