Hebburn, Durham
Hebburn is a town in Durham, on the south bank of the River Tyne. Though the parish of Hebburn comes from Anglo-Saxon times, the town began as a mining village around the area now known as Hebburn Colliery. Hebburn Quay, on the river bend facing Wallsend, was originally a separate settlement – a centre of ship building and boiler making. Later in the nineteenth century, Hebburn New Town developed south of Hebburn Quay, close to Hebburn Hall (which dates from 1790). Hebburn’s present town centre is focused on this area. The town is within the council area of South Tyneside.
