Hayton Castle, Cumberland

Hayton Castle is a fortified house in Hayton, Cumberland. The castle is a 14th or 15th century tower house; extended in the 16th and 17th centuries and converted into a residence. Hayton Castle is a simple rectangular house, with windows from three periods - 15th Century, Elizabethan and Georgian. For about 300 years, the Musgrave family held the manor of Hayton, acquiring it in the late 15th century and remaining there until the early 19th century. Legend holds that Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed a night at Hayton Castle on May 17, 1568. Upon her departure, she is said to have given her host a miniature of herself set in a gold ring. Notable family members included Sir Edward Musgrave, a staunch Royalist during the English Civil War, who provided his own horse to King Charles II at the Battle of Worcester. The castle sustained significant damage from Parliamentary forces during the Civil War, and the vulnerable south end was rebuilt by Sir Richard Musgrave, Sir Edward's son. After passing out of the Musgrave family's hands, the Jolliffe family, who inherited it, preferred to lease it to tenant farmers rather than live in it. From the 19th century onward, it served as a farmhouse. Hayton Castle was sold in 1903 to David Mitchell, whose family retained the property into the 21st century. It is within the council area of Cumberland.
