Hayes, Middlesex
Hayes is a suburban and industrial town in western Middlesex. Until the end of the 19th century, the ancient parish of Hayes contained a few hamlets, the key work being in agriculture and brickmaking. The opening of Hayes station (1868) and the proximity of the Grand Junction Canal led to the development of Hayes as a centre for engineering and industry. Suburban developments followed. From 1904-1930, for local government purposes, Hayes was the basis of Hayes urban district then, from 1930-1965, Hayes and Harlington urban district. Hayes is known as the former home of EMI, the words "Hayes, Middlesex" appearing on the reverse of countless albums. St Mary the Virgin Church, in the original hamlet of Hayes, dates from the 12th century. Barra Hall, in Wood End, is a 19th-century manor house, now in a public park. The town is within the council area of Hillingdon.
