Hayes is a suburban village in Kent. Hayes Place was built in the 15th century and later home to William Pitt the Elder and William Pitt Younger. It was demolished in 1933. Hayes was already a large village when the railway arrived in 1881, though it was not until the inter-war period that it saw large-scale suburban development, spreading northwards towards Bromley. The Church of St Mary the Virgin dates from the 13th century, with major 19th century restorations. The George public house dates back at least as far as 1759. The village is within the council area of Bromley.
