Havering-atte-Bower, Essex
Havering-atte-Bower is a village in Essex. It is recorded in Domesday as 'Haueringas'. The 'atte Bower' suffix is taken to mean 'at the royal residence' and to refer to Havering Palace, a royal manor situated here from Saxon times until being abandoned in 1686. The church of St John the Evangelist was built in 1878 to replace an older chapel dedicated to St Mary that had been part of the palace. The village is within the council area of Havering.
