Harwich, Essex
Harwich is a port town in Essex. It lies on the broad estuary of the River Stour, which divides Essex to the south from Suffolk to the north, it opens on to the North Sea. The town received its charter in 1238. The town became a naval base in 1657. Harwich played an important part in the Napoleonic and the two world wars. Harwich is highly regarded in terms of architectural heritage, the regular street plan with principal thoroughfares connected by numerous small alleys indicating the town's mediæval origins. The town is within the council area of Tendring (Essex).
