Hartlepool is a seaside and port town in County Durham. The original town was founded in the 7th century, around the monastery of Hartlepool Abbey on a headland. As the village grew into a town in the Middle Ages, its harbour served as the County Palatine of Durham's official port. The new town of West Hartlepool was created in 1835 after a new port was built and railway links from the South Durham coal fields and from Stockton-on-Tees were created. The two towns were known collectively as "The Hartlepools" from Victorian times. 20th-century development saw them form a contiguous urban area. From 1967 they were put under the same local authority. The term Hartlepool is nowadays used to refer to the whole urban area - the term West Hartlepool being much less commonly used than in the past. The town is within the council area of Hartlepool.
