Harlyn House, Cornwall
Harlyn House is a manor house near St Merryn, Cornwall. It is largely of 18th century structure on the site of a 14th-century house built by de Tregoy, a small part of one wall is still extant. The ancient manor was once the seat of the Tregewe family, who lived there from at least the mid 15th century onwards. When Henry Tregewe died without a male heir in 1632 the estate passed to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Thomas Peter, who rebuilt much of it in 1635 and it remained in the Peter family for the next 200 years. Although some of the house that you see today is thought to date from the mediæval period the building has been remodelled many times over the centuries as the wealth and wants of the family grew and changed. On several occasions Harlyn House became a safe refuge for shipwrecked sailors. The house was derelict in 1939 but was restored by 1947. The house features historic plasterwork and other details from Medieval, Jacobean, and Georgian periods. The property sits on nearly five acres of gardens and offers panoramic sea views. There is also a circular dovecote in the garden. In the 21st century, the manor became a luxury hotel and restaurant called 'The Pig'. It is within the council area of Cornwall.
