Hardwick Old Hall, Derbyshire
Hardwick Old Hall is a ruined Elizabethan mansion near Ault Hucknall, Derbyshire. The Old Hall was built on the site of Bess of Hardwick's ancestral home, which she began to re-model and greatly enlarge in 1587. It was an innovative Elizabethan mansion known for its radical design, including large windows and an unusual central hall layout, which provided a prototype for the nearby 'New Hall', which was being built concurrently. Bess moved to the New Hall in 1597. Hardwick Old Hall is now a magnificent, though roofless ruin. Conservation work was carried out in the late 20th and early 21st centuries to stabilise the ruins and protect the plasterwork. It is within the council area of Bolsover (Derbyshire).
