The council area has a significantly different area to the historic county from which it takes its name, primarily because the council area does not include Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Christchurch and the Isle of Wight, all of which are part of the historic county. There are several other small differences between the border of the council area and that of the historic county.
