Ham, West, Essex

West Ham is a large town in Essex, lying immediately to the north of the River Thames and east of the River Lea. West Ham was an ancient parish formed to serve the western parts of the older (Saxon-era) Manor of Ham. The village of West Ham lay near the centre of the parish, around the 12th century All Saints Church. The parish saw large-scale industry and housing development after the Metropolitan Building Act 1855 after certain industries were restricted from operating in the metropolitan area (west of the Lea). The parish became a municipal borough in 1886. From 1889-1965, for local government purposes, the parish was the basis of West Ham county borough. The town is within the council area of Newham.
