Halesowen, Worcestershire
Halesowen is a market town in Worcestershire. The manor and town was known as Hala until it was given by Henry II to Welsh Prince Dafydd ab Owain and became 'Halas Owen'. Halesowen Abbey (1218) was a Premonstratensian abbey founded by Peter des Roches with a grant of land from King John. During the 18th century Halesowen developed rapidly as a result of the Industrial Revolution, nail making becoming a major industry. The Norman Church of St John the Baptist was founded by Roger de Montgomery. Whitefriars dates from the 16th century. The town is within the council area of Dudley.
