Groomsport, Down

Groomsport is a seaside village, lying on the north coast of the Ards Peninsula in County Down. It is within the townland of Groomsport, in the civil parish of Bangor. The village developed beside the natural sheltered harbour, between the shore, Ballymacormick Point and Cockle Island. The harbour is reputed to be of Viking origin. James Hamilton received land here during the Plantation. Thomas Raven's map of 1625 shows 'Groms Porte', houses and the harbour. By the mid-19th century Groomsport had a relatively large fishing fleet and housed a lifeboat station in its sheltered bay. The arrival of the railway in nearby Bangor led to Groomsport becoming a popular destination for visitors. Groomsport has since developed as a centre for water and shore-based recreation. Nonetheless, the village retains the identity and character of a small harbour village. The village is within the council area of Ards and North Down.
