Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire

Grimsthorpe Castle is a historic country house at Grimsthorpe, Lincolnshire, in the Parts of Kesteven. The castle's origins are in a 13th-century castle possibly built by Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln. It was largely rebuilt by Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk in 1540-1541, much of this Tudor house remaining today. There have been many subsequent alterations and additions, notably the 1723 Baroque front to the house designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. Vanbrugh's Great Hall is monumental with stone arcades all around at two levels. The castle lies within a 3,000-acre park of rolling pastures, lakes, and woodland landscaped by Capability Brown. Grimsthorpe has been the home of the de Eresby family since 1516. It is within the council area of South Kesteven (Lincolnshire).
