Greenisland, Antrim
Greenisland is a small town lying on the north shore of the Belfast Lough in County Antrim. It is within the townland of West Division, in the civil parish of Carrickfergus. Greenisland developed as a linear hamlet (then known as Green Island) along the coast road close to the islet of Green Island in the early 19th century. Housing continued to spread along this stretch of shore throughout the 19th century to the extent that Carrickfergus Junction (opened 1848) was renamed Greenisland Station in 1893. The road from the coast to the station and beyond was developed by the mid 20th century, all of it being considered part of Greenisland. The 1950s and 1960s saw further housing development to the west of this road. The area north of the railway is commonly known as Upper Greenisland and that to its south as Lower Greenisland. The town is within the council area of Mid and East Antrim.
