Greenford, Middlesex

Greenford is a large town in Middlesex. The name is first recorded in 848 as 'Grenan forda'. The main settlement lay around Holy Cross Church, with the hamlet of Greenford Green lying in the north of the parish. Industry developed around the Grand Junction Canal near Greenford Green from the mid 19th century. Significant residential development around the two settlements followed in the 20th century and the area became one town. From 1894-1926, for local government purposes, the ancient parishes of Greenford, Perivale and West Twyford formed the basis of Greenford urban district, the town from 1926-1965 being part of Ealing municipal borough. It is within the council area of Ealing.
