Greencastle is a 13th-century royal castle, sited on a rocky outcrop close to Greencastle Point, commanding the mouth of Carlingford Lough, in the townland of Greencastle, County Down. It was built in the 13th century, taken by Edward Bruce in 1316, attacked at least twice by the Irish in the late 14th century and maintained as a garrison up to 1590. The curtain wall had four corner towers, of which only the bases of two remain. The four storey keep dates from the 13th century with later alterations. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
