Great Dunmow, Essex
Great Dunmow is a historic market town, lying on the Roman road Stane Street in the north-west of Essex. A Roman settlement lay at the site. It either remained in continuous occupation or had been reoccupied by 951 AD when it is first recorded as 'Dunmow'. The Church of St Mary the Virgin (C of E) was rebuilt from an older church in the 13th century. Great Dunmow was awarded a market charter in 1227 and a municipal charter in 1555. The Old Town Hall in the Market Place was completed in 1578. The town is within the council area of Uttlesford (Essex).
