Great Barr, Staffordshire

Great Barr is a former village that is now a large suburban area between Perry Barr and Walsall, in Staffordshire. The area, first listed as 'Baerr' in a charter of 957, takes its name from the Barr Beacon. Until the 20th century, Great Barr remained a largely rural area. The village of Great Barr lay spread along the main road from Birmingham to Walsall (now the A34). Great Barr Hall is an 18th-century mansion set in a large deer park. The area saw substantial urban development in the 20th century. The name is now used to describe a large, loosely-defined area which includes much of the northern part of the ancient parish of Perry Barr, including Hamstead, Pheasey, Perry Beeches, Old Oscott and Queslett. The larger Great Barr area lies within the council areas of Sandwell, Wasall and Birmingham.
