Gloucester, Gloucestershire

Gloucester is a city and the county town of Gloucestershire. Gloucester stands on the eastern bank of the River Severn, which is tidal as far as Gloucester. Gloucester was founded in AD 97 by the Romans under Emperor Nerva as Colonia Glevum Nervensis, and was granted its first charter in 1155 by King Henry II. Gloucester Cathedral originates in the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter in 681. It is the burial place of King Edward II. Gloucester is within the council area of Gloucester (Gloucestershire).
