Gillingham, Kent

Gillingham is a town in Kent. Mentioned in Domesday, Gillingham remained a small village by the River Medway well into the 19th century. From 1800, the settlement of New Brompton was developed between Brompton and Gillingham, eventually joining up with Gillingham. The urban district created in 1894 was named Gillingham and this eventually became the name for the whole area. The town is within the council area of Medway.
