Gilford, Down

Gilford is a village, lying on the River Bann in County Down. It is within the townlands of Loughans and Drumaran, in the civil parish of Tullylish. Gilford was founded by Captain John Magill in the mid 17th century. The estate passed to the Johnston family, who built the first Gilford Castle and developed the village, fostering milling and farming. It remained a small settlement until the early 19th century, when the opening of a flax spinning mill saw the village grow substantially. Benjamin Dickson, a linen magnate, commissioned a new, larger Gilford Castle around 1865, designed by William Spence in the Scots Baronial style. The village is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
