Giant's Hill, Cambridgeshire

Giant's Hill is a Norman motte castle near Rampton, Cambridgeshire. It lies on the Ampthill Clay at the western edge of Little North Fen. The motte is a roughly rectangular, flat-topped island, about 5ft higher than the adjacent fields, measuring 165ft by 145ft across and surrounded by a ditch up to 130ft wide by 6ft deep. During the Second World War the castle was utilised as a gun emplacement by the Home Guard. The castle is thought to have been built over the eastern end of the mediæval settlement at Rampton. At least two embanked enclosures remain to the north of the castle. The site is within the council area of South Cambridgeshire (Cambridgeshire).
