Giant's Hall, Lancashire

Giant's Hall is a 17th-century farmhouse near Wigan in Lancashire. The residence derives its name from the huge glacial boulders near the house, which according to local belief are so large they must have been placed there by giants. One weighing five tons was considered to be in the way of farming operations and was buried. A datestone shows the year 1675 and the letters 'WPL' after the initials of the earliest known occupants, William Lathom and his wife Priscilla. It is possible that the year 1675 is the date the farmhouse was reconstructed by the Lathoms, and not the original construction date, as some features suggest parts of the building are Jacobean or even Elizabethan in origin. It is Grade II listed. It is within the council area of Wigan.
