Gawsworth Old Hall, Cheshire

Gawsworth Old Hall is a country house in Gawsworth, Cheshire. The house was built in the 15th / 16th century with 19th and 20th century additions and alterations. It is a timber-framed house in the Cheshire black-and-white style. The earliest mention of a house in 'Gowesworth' is from 1365 when it was granted a licence for a chapel. It is considered by some architectural historians that the site of the house was originally moated and that its plan was that of a quadrangle forming a courtyard house. The hall was remodelled in the Elizabethan period with south and west ranges added to the existing wings. The terraced gardens were also laid out at this time. In around 1700 the west range and half of the south range were demolished leaving a 3-sided courtyard. It has been owned by only five families since Norman times. The house was owned by the Cheshire antiquary Raymond Richards until his death in 1978. Richards collected items from historic buildings that were being demolished in the 1960s, either incorporating them into the house or displaying them in the grounds. The hall is still owned and run by the Richards family but is open to the public on advertised dates when a series of events are held in the hall and grounds during the year. In the summer, plays, concerts and other entertainments take place in the open-air theatre close to the hall. It is within the council area of Cheshire East.
