Gateshead, Durham
Gateshead is a town in County Durham, on the River Tyne's southern bank, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne to which it is joined by seven bridges. The town contains the Millennium Bridge, The Sage, and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, There has been a settlement on the Gateshead side of the Tyne, around the old river crossing where the Swing Bridge now stands, since Roman times. Bede referred to an Abbot of Gateshead called Utta in 623. The town is within the council area of Gateshead.
