Galgorm Castle, Antrim

Galgorm Castle is a Jacobean manor house near Ballymena, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Galgorm, in the civil parish of Ahoghill. Built around 1618 by Sir Faithful Fortescue, Galgorm Castle is a three-storey house in a (1645) fortified enclosure. The early oak staircase, with turned balusters and large round heads on the newels, survives. The estate passed by inheritance to the Earls Mount Cashell, the 3rd Earl of whom altered and modernized the house around 1830, giving it regular fenestration. Galgorm is on the site of a pre-1600 castle. The demesne, now the site of Galgorm Castle Golf Club, dates from the early 17th century. The house is within the council area of Mid and East Antrim.
