Fulham, Middlesex
Fulham is a metropolitan district in Middlesex, forming a western suburb of London. Fulham was a Saxon manor and ancient parish which, until 1834, also included Hammersmith. The manor belonged to the Bishop of London from the 8th century, the manor house developing into Fulham Palace, the country home of the bishops from the 11th century until 1973. The fishing village of Fulham grew around the palace with All Saints Church dating back to at least the 15th century. Several other settlements developed in the parish: Parsons Green, Walham Green, Sands End and North End. The parish saw large-scale industrial and suburban development in the 19th century. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis for the metropolitan borough of Fulham. Fulham FC, founded in 1879, moved to their riverside home of Craven Cottage in 1896. The district is within the council area of Hammersmith and Fulham.
