Frome, Somerset

Frome is a historic market town lying on the River Frome in eastern Somerset. The town has Saxon origins, reputedly being founded around 685 AD when St. Aldhelm built a church here. By the 14th century, it had become a significant town built on the wool and cloth trade, later becoming a centre for metal-working and printing. The town has a wealth of historic buildings. Cheap Street is one of the best-preserved mediæval streets in Europe. The Church of St John the Baptist (C of E), dating for the 12th century, was built on the site of Aldheim's Saxon church. Rock Lane Chapel, now an arts centre, was built as a Congregationalist chapel in 1707. The town has a vibrant arts scene, culminating in the Frome Festival each July. The town is within the council area of Somerset.
