Fortwilliam, Antrim
Fortwilliam is a northern suburb of Belfast, County Antrim. It lies within the townland of Skegoneill, in the civil parish of Shankill. The name derives from an entrenchment attributed to William III. Fortwilliam House dates from the late 18th century. From the 1870s, then owner James Valentine developed the estate as a gated community of luxurious homes. Fortwilliam Park road was developed at this time, with a lodge and gate posts at each end. Though many of the grand houses have since been demolished, the area remains a desirable residential neighbourhood. The Fortwilliam area is within the council area of Belfast.
