Forest Gate, Essex
Forest Gate is an urban area to the north-east of West Ham, Essex. The name is first recorded in the 17th century, the gate in question being to prevent cattle straying from the Wanstead Flats area of Epping Forest onto the Colchester to London road. The area remained rural until the mid 19th century, after which it saw large-scale development. The Industrial School, now a residential development, opened in 1854. The area is within the council area of Newham.
