Finsbury, Middlesex

Finsbury is a metropolitan district lying immediate north of the Coleman Street ward of the city of London, Middlesex. The Manor of Finsbury is first recorded as Vinisbir (1231), at that time comprising an area of boggy moor beyond the city wall. From 1315, the manor was leased by the Lord Mayor of London, the manor house lying at the present day junction of Chiswell Street and Finsbury Pavement. The area did not see substantial urban development until the late 17th century. The parish Church of St Luke was built in 1733. From the late 18th century a residential suburb was built around Finsbury Square (1777) and Finsbury Circus (1815). The area is mostly within the council area of Islington, though a part is within the City of London (Coleman Street Ward).
