Finchley, Middlesex

Finchley is a suburban town in Middlesex. The earliest recording of the name is from the early 13th century. St Mary-at-Finchley Church is first recorded in the 1270, the hamlet at Church End developing around it. The hamlet of East End (East Finchley) had begun to develop by 1365. The railway reached Finchley in 1867 and the trams by 1905, after which it became increasingly suburbanised. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish of Finchley formed the basis of Finchley urban district - a municipal borough from 1933. The town is within the council area of Barnet.
