Fillingham Castle, Lincolnshire
Fillingham Castle (aka Summer Castle) is a castellated mansion near Fillingham, Lincolnshire, in the Parts of Lindsey. It was built around 1760-1770 for Sir Cecil Wray, possibly by the architect John Carr of York. The castle is a large, square Gothic style mansion with a large hall, circular bastion towers, and crenelated parapets. It is situated on a rise and offers views into five counties. The Wray family died out in the 19th century, and the Daltons inherited the property, primarily letting it to tenants. The property declined during the first half of the 20th century but after the Rose family purchased the property in 1949 they undertook a major restoration project of the estate. An 18th-century landscape park and woodlands of 40 hectares surround the castle. The castle remains in private ownership. It is within the council area of West Lindsey (Lincolnshire).
