Fairlop, Essex
Fairlop is a suburban area in the north of Ilford, Essex. Fairlop takes its name from Fairlop Plain which lay to the south of Hainault Forest. The plain possibly took its name from a famous lopped oak tree, the Fairlop Oak (reputedly sixty-six feet in circumference), beneath which fairs were held from around 1725 to the mid-1850s. The tree blew down in 1820. Fairlop station opened in 1903 and housing developed to its west thereafter. Fairlop Plain is now the Fairlop Waters Country Park. The area is within the council area of Redbridge.
