Failsworth, Lancashire

Failsworth is a town in Lancashire, three miles south-west of Oldham. Previously an agricultural village, Failsworth grew to be a mill town during the 19th century. For local government purposes, it formed the basis of Failsworth urban district from 1894-1974. The Failsworth Pole stands on the site where similar such "political poles" have stood since 1793. The gardens around it contain a bronze statue of Benjamin Brierley, a journalist and writer in Lancashire dialect. The town is within the council area of Oldham.
