Exmouth, Devon

Exmouth is a seaside resort and port town, situated on the east bank of the mouth of the River Exe on the south coast of Devon. The settlement is believed to have developed as a small fishing village from the 13th century. It became a fashionable resort when the French Revolution restricted continental travel. A permanent dock was constructed in 1825, superseded in 1868 by modern docks designed by Eugenius Birch. The arrival of the railway in 1861 saw Exmouth develop into a mass tourism resort town. The promenade and sea wall date from this era as do many of the town's buildings. The 20th century saw the town further develop as a commuter town for Exeter. The Jubilee Clock Tower was erected in 1897 to commemorate Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The town is within the council area of East Devon (Devon).
