Ermine Street, Huntingdonshire

Ermine Street is a Roman road stretching from Bishopsgate, London to York and passing through Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. It was built during the first three decades following the invasion of AD 43, though much of it may have been along existing routeways. Much of the route is still followed by roads today – elsewhere it is often visible in the form of tracks, crop marks or boundaries. Ermine Street enters Huntingdonshire from Cambridgeshire just north of Papworth Everard. It passes through Godmanchester and Huntingdon, Stilton, Water Newton before leaving Huntingdonshire where the road crosses the River Nene into Northamptonshire north of the Roman Camp of Dvrobrivae near Water Orton. The section of Ermine Street north of Stilton runs alongside the modern-Day A1(M). This section of Ermine Street is within the council area of Huntingdonshire (Cambridgeshire).
