Ermine Street is a Roman road stretching from Bishopsgate, London to York and passing through Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. It was built during the first three decades following the invasion of AD 43, though much of it may have been along existing routeways. Much of the route is still followed by roads today – elsewhere it is often visible in the form of tracks, crop marks or boundaries. Ermine Street enters Hertfordshire from Middlesex to the west of Waltham Cross, running due north, and went via Ware and Braughing late Iron Age and Roman settlements, to leave Hertfordshire where the road crosses the Icknield Way at Royston, heading into Cambridgeshire. The course survives well as earthworks, cropmarks, and lengths still in use as roads or rights of way. The section of Ermine Street south of Buntingford forms part of the modern-day A10. This section of Ermine Street is within the council area of East Hertfordshire (Hertfordshire).
